The supplies you’ll need for steaming will depend on whether you’d like to steam with a sauna box/chair, or if you prefer to kneel on the floor.

Kneeling Setup

Kneeling on the floor is the simplest way, but most people can’t tolerate being in this position for more than 10 minutes, even with plenty of padding; it’s just not very comfortable. Not everyone needs to steam for longer than this (in fact many people shouldn’t*), but it’s also not a great option for people who have trouble getting up and down from the floor.

That said, all you need for this setup is a medium pot (2-3 quarts will work; material should be stainless, glass, earthenware, or clay — never plastic) and herbs.

Most people already have a pot in their home that will work. This shape works the best — not too wide, and not too tall. You need to be able to set up with your knees on the floor on either side of the pot. You may want to wrap a small towel around the pot to avoid burning your thighs.

Sauna Box Setup

For the sauna box, you’ll need a tall-ish pot, a steam box, and herbs.

The biggest challenge is finding a pot that fits inside, because most pots have long handles or are too wide to fit inside a steam box. Personally, I use this one — it’s relatively cheap, but well made, and it’s the perfect capacity. it fits in every steam box I’ve ever seen, but you should double-check it with the dimensions of your box.

I really like this steam box model because it can be disassembled and easily carried or stored in the tote bag (which you have to purchase separately here, but it’s literally the perfect size and worth it to have, IMO).

There’s also an extensive variety of sauna boxes available for purchase here.

Steaming Herbs

We sell our 100% organic herbal blends here, and we also offer custom blends (text HERBS to this number for more about that option).

If you’re making your own herbal blend, you might like to have an infuser basket — the cleanup is much easier if you use one. Our blends come in jumbo tea bags, so you won’t need the infuser basket.

Once you’ve got all your supplies…

Enjoy your steam!
