Yoni Steaming Myths, Part 3

Myth #3: Steaming will give you an infection.

Let’s think about this one logically.

What’s in the pot that you use for your pelvic steam session?

Herbs… Water/vapor…

That’s it!

As long as you’re using equipment that’s been properly cleaned, steam cannot introduce mucus or bacteria into the vaginal canal. And as long as you’re using the right herbs for you (determined by a qualified practitioner), steaming is not going to disrupt a healthy vaginal pH.

The reason for this myth is that some women will experience an increase in irregular discharge after steaming.

Why? Because the steam will loosen up & draw mucus out of the vaginal canal and uterus (all the way out of the body, where it becomes visible).

If you think back to a time that you’ve had a head-cold and taken a hot shower, you might remember that after the shower, you’d usually notice an increase in mucus – releasing from your nasal passages. You would never say that the shower caused your infection, just because you saw more mucus afterwards. The same concept applies to steaming the pelvic region.

Mucus is a place where bacteria and viruses thrive, so when we work with steam to try and clear up an infection, the objective is to draw all the irregular discharge out – that way the vagina is no longer a hospitable environment for those pathogens.
